I wanted to share my set up for the game audio and Discord for anyone that was interested. I was able to stream game audio through my main speakers while Discord audio is routed through my headset. For the most part, both audio is clear enough to still enjoy the game's sounds while still being able to make out voice comms. Lots of tanking or heavy shellings are still difficult to work around but meh, it is what it is.
I have a single PC speaker, I know, not ideal for directional identification in game, but it's good enough to stir up some trouble. Ultimately I use it because I can switch between PC mode and Aux mode to serve as a mobile speaker for my phone when I'm not on my PC--I'm a sucker for dual purpose. Anyways, it's a Bose Soundlink II, it's small but has a surprising amount of umph. It's connected to my PC via a 3.5mm jack. I assigned my speaker as the default device in the Sound menu, then Playback devices. I'm on Win7, it's different enough on Win10 to be a bit more of a pain but I don't have anything to reference with that version to be able to walk through that.
As a headset, I'm using a Plantronics C510, which is a USB connection. This headset only has one ear piece, which actually works out great as I'll have voice comms in my right ear and the game sounds on my left. That's how I can usually hear both things at the same time without touching the volume. So in User Settings in Discord, I went to the Voice and Video option. I selected my headset as the Input Device and the Output device. I set my Input volume high because I tend to mumble and set my Output volume to my headset at about 60%, for me, it's a good compromise between hearing other quiet people and hearing louder people without having my eardrum blasted out in the process (not picking on anyone at all).
Then in the WWIIOL settings, I double check to make sure my speaker is selected, because we all know sometimes WWIIOL can be buggy.
The exact models of the hardware don't really matter. In my experience having one be a 3.5mm jack and having the other be a USB just seems a lot less of a hassle to set them up this way than if they were the same connection type. Interestingly, I haven't found a way to have all Discord sounds come through my headset--like if someone enters the room, my speaker will beep with the notification rather than through my headset--but I don't care enough to make a focused effort to change it.
I've heard others mention they stream ALL audio through their headset at the cost of lowering the game volume to be able to hear voice comms. There was another suggestion to run Discord from your phone and use the PC speakers for the game audio only. All valid points, do what works best for you.
