S!
So we're supposed to get actual artillery in the game, "Sooooon" as the old joke goes, so maybe in the next 5 years or so (hopefully much sooner). While I know how we use it will depend on how exactly it'll be implemented, I thought it might be fun to start brainstorming some possible future ops.
If we're able to have a forward observer to call in barrages, that could be a big advantage for us in general--we tend to be able to mark stuff fairly well; calling down some shells shouldn't be too much of a stretch from that. Granted, if it's anything like the mortar unit we have now, a FO might be pointless should the barrage be rather inaccurate. That could be negated in sheer volume though, if we had several artillery crews, well, quantity over quality I suppose lol
Anyways, an obvious use of the artillery would be to harass and possibly suppress the enemy. We might be able to bombard enemy airfields, between artillery and our AA. I imagine artillery shells would still kill any planes trying to take off. Likewise, shelling an enemy depot would be great. Even if it's not killing EI, it's still going to shake them up making it more difficult for them to shoot out of the depot. Same idea with enemy ABs or FBs.
Depending on the glider implementation, dare I say we could throw some artillery in a glider to supplement a paradrop if gliders will somehow treat artillery as a light gun? It might even make RDP runs way more weird--having friendly artillery that far behind enemy lines, blasting apart factories and all.
I vaguely remember artillery in WW2 being able to shoot flair-like bursts...'Star Shells' maybe?. If we had that kind of special ammo, it would liven up night ops tenfold. Likewise, smoke shells could be handy.
Anti-artillery raids would be needed as well. I feel like we also have an advantage here--hunting down EFRUs isn't too far from hunting down enemy artillery; I assume they're going to be just as large as a FMS. I hope there would be visible/killable crewmen to shoot but if it has to take HE charges instead, that's easy enough for us as well.
I am curious if the artillery could also be used as direct-fire, IE a bigger ATG, instead of an indirect weapon. Would it pierce the front armor of ET? For that matter, would it work on the hull of enemy ships? We'd certainly want to try.
What are your thoughts?
